Cookie Policy
This policy explains what cookies and similar technologies KeyForrest uses, what each one does, how long it lasts and how you can control them. It sits alongside our Privacy Policy and is written to meet the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 and the UK GDPR.
- Effective from: 22 August 2026
- Last reviewed: 22 August 2026
- Version: 1.0
- Applies to: keyforrest.co.uk
The short version
- Strictly necessary cookies — such as the ones that keep your basket and your login working — are always on, because the site cannot function without them.
- Analytics and advertising cookies are optional. You can refuse or remove them at any time using the controls in sections 8 and 9.
- We do not use cookies to build a profile of you for sale, and we do not share cookie data with third parties for their own marketing.
- Refusing non‑essential cookies will not stop you browsing, ordering or receiving your licence.
Contents
1. What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store on your device. When you return, the browser sends the file back, which lets the site recognise your session — for example to remember that you have items in your basket or that you are signed in.
Cookies set by keyforrest.co.uk are called first‑party cookies. Cookies set by another organisation whose service appears on our pages, such as Google, are third‑party cookies. A session cookie is deleted when you close your browser; a persistent cookie stays until it expires or you delete it.
2. The categories we use
| Category | What it is for | Do we need your consent? |
|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary | Making the site work: baskets, checkout, sign‑in, security | No — exempt under PECR, because the site cannot provide the service you requested without them |
| Functional | Remembering preferences such as currency, wishlist and recently viewed items | Optional — see sections 8 and 9 |
| Analytics | Understanding how the site is used so we can improve it | Optional — see sections 8 and 9 |
| Advertising | Measuring our advertising and showing relevant ads | Optional — see sections 8 and 9 |
3. Strictly necessary cookies
These are always active. Blocking them in your browser will break parts of the site, including checkout.
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| woocommerce_cart_hash | KeyForrest | Tells the site when the contents of your basket have changed | Session |
| woocommerce_items_in_cart | KeyForrest | Tracks whether your basket has items in it | Session |
| wp_woocommerce_session_* | KeyForrest | Links your browser to your basket and checkout data on our server | 2 days |
| wordpress_logged_in_* | KeyForrest | Keeps you signed in to your account between pages | Session, or 14 days if you choose “remember me” |
| wordpress_sec_* | KeyForrest | Secures authenticated areas such as My Account | Session |
| wordpress_test_cookie | KeyForrest | Checks that your browser accepts cookies before sign‑in | Session |
| _GRECAPTCHA | Distinguishes real customers from bots on our forms and checkout, to prevent fraud and spam | 6 months | |
| PHPSESSID | KeyForrest | Maintains your server session during a visit | Session |
4. Functional cookies
These remember choices you make so the site feels consistent. They are optional and can be refused or removed at any time.
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| wp-settings-* | KeyForrest | Remembers interface preferences for signed‑in users | 12 months |
| woocommerce_recently_viewed | KeyForrest | Powers the “recently viewed products” list | Session |
| woodmart_wishlist / wd_* | KeyForrest | Remembers your wishlist and product comparison selections | Up to 12 months |
5. Analytics cookies
These help us understand which pages are useful, where customers get stuck and how well the site performs. The data is aggregated and we do not use it to identify you personally. They are optional and you can opt out of them entirely — see below and section 9.
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| _ga | Google Analytics | Assigns a random identifier so returning visits can be counted | 2 years |
| _ga_* | Google Analytics | Maintains the analytics session state | 2 years |
| _gid | Google Analytics | Distinguishes visitors for daily reporting | 24 hours |
| _gat / _gat_gtag_* | Google Analytics | Limits how often data is sent, to reduce load | 1 minute |
Google’s own explanation of how it uses data from sites that use its services is at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites. You can opt out of Google Analytics across all sites using the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
6. Advertising cookies
We advertise through Google Ads and list products through Google Shopping. These cookies let us see which adverts led to a sale so we do not waste money on advertising that does not work, and they allow relevant ads to be shown to you elsewhere. They are optional and you can opt out of them — see below and section 9.
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| _gcl_au | Measures which ad clicks lead to orders (conversion tracking) | 90 days | |
| NID | Stores advertising preferences on Google properties | 6 months | |
| IDE / DSID | Google (DoubleClick) | Measures ad performance and helps show relevant ads | Up to 13 months |
| test_cookie | Google (DoubleClick) | Checks whether your browser supports cookies | 15 minutes |
You can control the ads Google shows you at myadcenter.google.com, and opt out of interest‑based advertising from many companies at youronlinechoices.com/uk.
7. Similar technologies
As well as cookies we use a small number of related technologies, and the same consent rules apply to them:
- Local storage — used by the theme to hold basket and interface state in your browser. It is not sent to our server with every request.
- Pixels and tags — tiny transparent images or scripts used by Google to confirm that a page loaded or an order completed.
- Server logs — our host records IP addresses and requests for security and troubleshooting. These are not cookies, are not used for advertising, and are kept for 12 months.
8. Managing your cookie preferences
Only the strictly necessary cookies in section 3 are required for the site to work. Everything else is optional, and refusing it will not stop you browsing, ordering, receiving your licence key or getting support.
You can control the optional categories in the following ways, and you may change your mind at any time:
- Refuse or delete them in your browser. Every major browser lets you block third‑party cookies, block cookies from a specific site, or delete existing ones. See section 9 for links.
- Opt out of analytics. Install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on, which stops Google Analytics measuring your visits to any website.
- Opt out of advertising. Use Google My Ad Center to turn off personalised advertising, and Your Online Choices to opt out across many advertising companies at once.
- Use private browsing. An incognito or private window discards all cookies when you close it.
- Ask us. Email [email protected] and we will confirm what is set for your session and help you remove it.
Withdrawing consent or opting out does not affect the lawfulness of any processing carried out before you did so. You also have the right to object to processing for direct marketing purposes at any time, as explained in our Privacy Policy.
9. Controlling cookies in your browser
Every major browser lets you block, restrict or delete cookies. Note that blocking strictly necessary cookies will prevent checkout from working.
General guidance on cookies for consumers is available from the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk/for-the-public/online/cookies.
10. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
There is no agreed industry standard for responding to browser “Do Not Track” signals, so our site does not currently respond to them. Where your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as an objection to advertising cookies and do not set them. The most reliable way to record your preference is to use the browser and opt-out controls described in sections 8 and 9.
11. Changes to this policy
We review this policy whenever we add or remove a service that sets cookies, and at least once a year. The effective date at the top of the page shows when the current version took effect.
